What follows is a breathless black comedy in the Ealing tradition starring the late Ian Bannen as the village's scheming elder. Good natured if slightly black comedy with the late much missed Ian Bannen starring with David Kelly as a pair of mischievous old men living in a small gossipy village on the West coast of Ireland. On discovering that someone in their own village has won the national lottery they assume it would be an easy task to uncover the winner and tempt them to part with at least part of their winnings in return for life long friendship. However when they discover that the actual winner Ned Divine not only won the jackpot but died of shock as a result they concoct an audacious scheme to con the lottery fund out of his winnings. Needless to say had this film been made in Hollywood it would have been soaked in sentiment and morals. Not here. This film revels in its own larceny to highly entertaining effect. Falling into the category of films set in small towns in the British Isles (such as Local Hero or to a lesser extent The Full Monty) which delight American audiences. Bannen and Kelly are engaging unconventional heroes and while their devious tactics might upset the odd uptight puritan they're very easy to root for. The supporting cast including Cold Feet's James Nesbit and Susuan Lynch is similarly excellent. A warm witty comedy.
