However his kinetic approach to film-making and his evident delight in the process makes Spy Kids enormously successful. Unlike most Hollywood films Rodriguz doesn't talk down to his target audience. Spy Kids is aimed fair and square at the junior viewer that many adults should enjoy the result is almost incidental. The heroes are kids - a brother and a sister who bicker and argue as brothers and sisters tend to do and their nemesis Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming) is - ingeniously - the presenter of a spectacularly colourful children's television program. The story takes place in a semi-fantasy version of reality. Floop's castle look's like a giant boot given a Gaudi makeover with interior decoration which would make Lawrence Lowellen Bowen blush. This is production design without restraints and it is quite stunning. Floop's henchmen are excellent too - odd creatures composed entirely of thumbs whose clumsy nature proves to be an amusing running joke. The adult cast - including Antonio Bandaras and Carla Gugino as the parents Cumming and Tony Shalboub as the baddies and fun cameos from Teri Hatcher Cheech Marin and Robert Patrick. However the kids themselves Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara steal every scene they get. Neither precocious or annoying they just seem like real kids taking their fantastical surroundings for granted and getting on with saving the day. Although wheeling out a slightly cheesy message in the final reel Spy Kids is smart fiendishly entertaining stuff. It has only one agenda - to be fun - and in that it succeeds in every department.
